Integration Virtual Development (I-3)

The challenge of integration is the end-to-end requirement of various cutting edge technologies. With that architectural topologies requirements, developers usually ended up building different development virtual image.

I figure maybe, I will start with the following virtual development configurations:
  1. Application Development - OS: Windows 2008 R2, Database: SQL Server 2008  (SSMS, Engine, SSRS, SSIS, Analytic Services, BI Dev Studio), Development: SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010,  Office 2010, and Visio
  2. Connected Systems Application Development - OS: Windows 2008 R2, Database: SQL Server 2008 (SSMS, Engine, SSRS, SSIS, Analytic Services, BI Dev Studio), Integration: BizTalk 2010, Development:  SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010,  Office 2010, and Visio
So with that target environment, everything is build and working perfect, and the only thing missing now is the back-end ERP. I figure I will start with SAP AG (Netweaver, ABAP) 7.1 and this is where the pain starts. You should be able to download the developer image from SAP web site at this link:

http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/nw-downloads

This is your biggest take away on this blog that will save you frustration installing the SAP. Remember that SharePoint, SQL, and other servers get installed using your computer's name (remember the localhost). The image Windows created has this name WIN-5FHW8EEJ6E but hold your breath SAP has this limitation installing the server on 13 characters limitation.

http://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?threadID=24001

With this limitation, changing your computer name to conform to the 13 character limitation impose by SAP will obviously break the following:
  1. Your SharePoint where the sites and central administration got installed
  2. SQL Server where the engine and reporting server got installed
  3. And maybe everything else internally
So, install SAP first then install everything else. Finally, make sure you download both the Netweaver Portal installation AND Netweaver Export. You will need both when installing them.
